What can I do if…
Your card has roughly enough credit left for two days of unlimited travel in Zones 1–3. These zones cover the heart of London, where most landmarks and attractions are, plus nearby areas such as Greenwich, Kew Gardens and Wimbledon.
If you run out of credit, top up at any station or Visitor Centre in London. Daily caps are:
- Zones 1–2: a maximum of £8.90 per day
- Zones 1–3: a maximum of £10.50 per day
- Zones 1–4: a maximum of £12.80 per day
- Zones 1–5: a maximum of £15.30 per day
- Zones 1–6: a maximum of £16.30 per day
Make sure you have enough credit on your Visitor Oyster card for the journey back to Gatwick Airport. Top up at any station or Visitor Centre in London.
- Gatwick Express: you’ll need £24 on your card.
- National Rail: you’ll need £19.20 at peak times (06:30–09:30 and 16:00–19:00, Monday to Friday except public holidays), or £10.70 off-peak.
If you’re travelling with a very large family or a group of 10 or more, we recommend our Group Day Travelcard. For smaller groups travelling with children:
- Children aged 0–10: up to four children under 11 travel free on the TfL network when accompanied by a paying adult.
- Children aged 11–15: can use a standard Visitor Oyster card at adult rates, or ask a member of TfL staff in London to add a Young Visitor discount. This gives 50% off adult pay as you go fares for up to 14 days, and can be added at any Tube station or Visitor Centre once you arrive.
- Aged 16 and over: adult rates apply.
Your friend or relative will need their own Visitor Oyster card. For the smoothest journey from the airport into central London, contact the train stations at the start and end of your journey to find out about their accessibility schemes.

Yes. You’ll receive a standard Visitor Oyster card with enough pre-loaded credit for your journey into London Victoria on the Gatwick Express, or on any other train transfer, without queuing at the station when you arrive.
After your transfer, keep using it around London: there’s enough credit for approximately two days of travel in Zones 1–3, and you can top it up if you need more.
This Visitor Oyster card costs £60.50: a £10.50 activation fee plus £50 of pre-loaded credit. £24 of this covers your journey from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria on the Gatwick Express.
That leaves enough credit for approximately two days of further travel in Zones 1–3 on the bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, River Bus and most National Rail services. Check your balance and top up at any station or Visitor Centre if you need more.
After your airport transfer you’ll have enough credit for approximately two days of travel in Zones 1–3. The daily cap for Zones 1–3 is currently £10.50, so add this for each further day of unlimited travel in central London.
- Visitor Oyster cards deduct credit every time you make a journey.
- After you make several journeys in one day, you will reach the daily cap, and the rest of the journeys you make on that day will be free.
- Different journeys cost different amounts depending on travel zone and time of travel. Daily caps also vary according to these factors.
- Peak times are more expensive than off-peak times. Peak times are Monday to Friday, 06:30 am – 09:30 am and 04:00 pm – 07:00 pm. All other times are off-peak.
Unfortunately, Visitor Oyster cards cannot have Railcards or Travelcards applied to them.
- No, each person must have their own Visitor Oyster card, except under 11s who travel free with a paying adult on Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, and some National Rail services – up to 4 children per adult.
- However, children under 11 do not travel free on most National Rail services unless they have a 5-10 Oyster photocard.
You can use your Visitor Oyster card to travel to and from Heathrow Airport, London City Airport (using DLR) and Gatwick Airport.
If you run out of credit, you can top up your card at any station or at thousands of shops throughout London. You can also make one bus journey without any credit. The cost of the journey will be deducted when you next top up your Visitor Oyster card.
Unused cards can be returned to us within 1 month of purchase for a refund of the price paid, excluding delivery (see our terms and conditions). After that, refunds of remaining credit are handled by TfL:

The £10.50 activation fee is not refundable. The card is cancelled once refunded. See the TfL refunds page for details.
